Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 has triggered a refugee crisis, with over 7 million people fleeing the country, while another 8 million remain displaced within. Indiscriminate strikes on civilian areas by Russian forces have sent people underground, sometimes living in dank basements for months at a time. As the war hits its six month mark, the toll on the nation’s psyche and its citizens is all too stark.

Every day, thousands line up outside aid distribution points in various villages and towns across the country, a testament to the enormity of the humanitarian crisis that has unfolded, and every day, is yet another series of funerals for Ukrainian servicemen who have died in the fighting.

NYTUKRAINE HOLD FOR VALERIE S PIECE YAHIDNE br br Oleh Turash center 54 who was held in the basement of a school with over 300 villagers by Russian forces in March and the school caretaker Ivan Petrovych behind 62 described the conditions they lived through including how people died while in captivity as well as being executed by Russian soldiers in Yahidne Ukraine on Wednesday June 8 2022 On the walls on either side of the door are the names of the villagers who were executed went missing or died because of the harsh conditions in the basement br br Yahidne was occupied by Russian forces on March 1 and retaken by the Ukrainian military on March 31 In the duration of their occupation Russian soldiers held over 300 people in the basement of a school in the village which they also used as their base with limited food water and ability to move At least 70 children were in the basement and 12 people died over the course of their detention because of the conditions
