Iran is among the most vulnerable to climate change in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). One of the most important places where Iran's climate changes are evident is the Caspian Sea.

The Caspian Sea is the world’s largest inland body of water, variably described as the world’s largest lake or a full-fledged sea and is shared between Iran, Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.
The Caspian Sea is shrinking, at an unprecedented speed.
Various reports indicate that the water level of the Caspian Sea has decreased by one meter in recent years and could drop by 9 to 18 meters (30 to 59 feet) by the end of the 21st century.
The Caspian Sea supports a commercially important fishery, supplies water for agriculture, and provides recreation and work opportunities for people living nearby. Its waters are also home to several threatened species, including an estimated 90 percent of the planet’s last-remaining sturgeon. The vast river system and extensive wetlands attract millions of migrating birds and are the habitat of diverse flora and fauna.
The drying up of the Caspian Sea will have very serious consequences, including the destruction of the marine economy, the destruction of all kinds of fish, all kinds of creatures and plants that have a great impact on the economy, and the unemployment of those whose lives depend on the sea economy.
