For nearly two years, the full-scale Russian invasion and war in Ukraine has been raging and seems to continue throughout the winter with new plans of winning territories back or gaining new territories. According to UNHCR – The UN Refugee Agency, nearly 3.7 million people in Ukraine are internally displaced in January 2024. 6.3 million refugees from Ukraine were recorded in the world in January 2024.
Missile attacks, rockets from artillery and fights in the trenches are part of daily life at the frontline, also drones hitting military targets. But the Ukrainian people experience being hit from Russian missiles, in larger cities such as Kharkiv and the capital Kyiv. Therefore, the whole country is on constant alert.

In Yampil, around 350 people live. During the Russian occupation of the area around 800 people lived in the village. When standing in Yampil the sound of artillery is very present. Yampil is 10 kilometers from the frontline in the war between Ukrainian forces and Russian forces.

People in Yampil are often depressed by the war between Ukraine and Russia. According to Valeria, medical activities manager at Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), the elderly people in Yampil start very quickly to cry, if a conversation is about experienced traumas.

Lubov from Ukraine is receiving medicine and having a conversation with a doctor from Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in a clinic in Lyman, East part of Ukraine. Lubov’s blood pressure is high. Many elderly people have a high blood pressure, because of stress from the war. Since the full-scale Russian invasion and war started in February 2022 between Russia and Ukraine, many young people have left the area, and it is almost only the elderly Ukrainian people who remain. They don’t want to leave their homes, because they have lived there their whole life.
Lyman is located approximately 13 kilometers from the frontline in the war between Ukraine and Russia. The sounds of the artillery and bombs are present. Lyman was earlier occupied by the Russian military during the full-scale Russian invasion and war, but it was reclaimed by Ukrainian forces.

In August 2023, The New York Times published an article that estimated that around 70.000 Ukrainian forces have died in the war with Russia, and 100.000-120.000 forces are wounded. It also says that 120.000 Russian forces have died, and 170.000-180.000 are wounded.

Vasyl (67) looks into the camera while standing in the hallway of his home. In Dibrova, East part of Ukraine, Vasyl (67) lives with his wife. There are 70 people left in the village of Dibrova. Elderly people have stayed, and the young have left it. Fragments from artillery or missiles have hit the house of Vasyl and left it with some marks, among them two holes. He has been lucky, that his house still stands.
