Due to climate change and global warming, the air temperature in some cities in southeastern Turkey has risen to 45 degrees Celsius this summer. In Diyarbakir, the hottest city in the region, many rivers and lakes, especially Lake Kabakli, have dried up and the water rate has decreased by up to 30 percent. When Kabakli lake, where about 200 bird species live, dried up, the birds had to leave the pond. There are few birds left in the lake.

Dicle University Faculty of Science Biology Department Head and Ornithologist Prof. Dr. Ahmet Kilic is watching the lake dry up with sadness, saying that a large part of the migratory birds will not be able to migrate this year or will die on the migration route.

One of the drying lakes was the dam lake near the Dicle district. There is also about 30 percent water left in this lake. The birds and animals here have migrated to other areas. A primitive fishing boat stranded in the middle of a drying and cracking lake shows the dimensions of the drying.

A large number of birds living in lakes with the Tigris river passing near the city became hungry, weakened and became flightless because their feeding grounds dried up. Animal Lovers delivered a large number of storks and birds such as eagles and hawks in this situation to the Dicle Wildlife Protection and Rehabilitation Center affiliated to Dicle University.

To save the birds brought to the Rehabilitation Center, Prof. Dr. Alaettin Kaya, Veterinarian Ayse Ekinci Yilmaz and all the staff of the center are making intensive efforts. But the feet of 2 storks whose feet were injured and had gangrene were amputated. A stork whose wing was broken is also being treated.
